McKissack & McKissack led a design-build joint venture to construct the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, which commemorates the memory and spirit of the civil rights leader.
The MLK Memorial Foundation selected McKissack as the architect of record for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial. It is located on a four-acre site along the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C., adjacent to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial and on a direct line between the Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson Memorials. As architect of record, McKissack led the design-build team and provided project and construction management, architecture, landscape architecture, geotechnical engineering, stormwater management and sediment control services. The memorial was conceived as a site that would provide visitors with an engaging landscape experience, and as such utilized natural elements to honor a great man and the values that empowered his leadership. McKissack designed and built a new bookstore adjacent to the memorial.
