McKissack & McKissack, as part of a joint venture, provided construction and project management services for the expansion of McCormick Place, the largest convention center in North America. At the time of completion, the West Building Expansion becamethe largest new construction building in the country to attain USGBC LEED certification.
Bordered by Cermak Road, Martin Luther King Drive, Indiana Avenue and the Stevenson Expressway, Chicago’s McCormick Place attracts more than three million trade and public show visitors annually. The expansion project added a fourth building to the convention center that features Chicago's largest ballroom and a sustainable, half-acre rooftop garden that produces 8,000 pounds of produce and also serves as an event space. The West Building, totaling 700,000 SF, brings the expo center’s total exhibit space to 2.2 million SF and meeting room space to 600,000 SF. The West Building’s expansion was completed on budget and four months ahead of schedule.
