To remain globally competitive, the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. has undertaken interior renovation initiatives with the help of McKissack & McKissack to enhance conventioneers’ experience.
The new Walter E. Washington Convention Center, at 2.3 million SF, is Washington, D.C.’s largest building and the nation’s sixth largest convention center. McKissack conducted a multiphase interior design program that included upgrading all public lounge areas and office spaces throughout the building. The project’s vision was to better serve the community by providing an array of colorful and contemporary furnishings that would offer integrated power outlets, USB ports, touchscreens and Wi-Fi in many settings. The project required a total renovation of the office spaces, allowing McKissack to capture additional square footage, increase soundproofing and add an enhanced, integrated audiovisual system and computer interface. Additionally, selected executive boardrooms and conference rooms were enhanced with state-of-the-art technology and high-end “Class A” standard finishes and functionalities. The user experience was heightened by creating a vibrant atmosphere that connects people to the latest technologies while in the comfort of an “open but intimate” environment.
