Lincoln Memorial

The Lincoln Memorial honors Abraham Lincoln, the 16th U.S. president, and is located at the western end of the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The memorial is open to the public 24 hours a day and attracts over seven million visitors annually. Since its opening, it has been a key tourist attraction and a symbolic center for race relations and civil rights. Under an IDIQ with the National Park Service (NPS), McKissack provided design/build and program management services for physical security barriers and historic restoration to the Lincoln Memorial, as well as construction management-at-risk services for the roadway relocation. The work included: Lincoln Circle Rehabilitation & Design of Security Improvements: As designed, the project strategically controlled the traffic flow around the memorial with road improvements to the street approaches, entry ramps, and bridge approaches from Virginia. Work also included security barriers to protect the memorial from vehicular threats. The project required coordination with local agencies, permitting, and a well-defined public notification process because of roadway closures. Memorial Preservation: Lincoln Memorial preservation work included repairs to the masonry joints, resetting of the marble entrance steps, and preservation of the frieze entablature that surrounds the monument, exterior walls, column bases, front coffer, stylobates, and statue of Abraham Lincoln.
